Suddenly, it hit me.
People who have followed the same training or read the same book might understand a title, slang or an acronym. The rest does not give a damn about it. They just want their problems to be solved or opportunities being seized.
In this world of hyper specialisation and hyper connectivity, language alone is not enough. Do the test: are you able to create a bingo?
You get a bingo when you have 5 terms in a row for which you can articulate the core idea and what type of problem it can tackle or opportunity it can exploit.
A standard or best approach does not exist. The simple reason being that an average person or an average organisation does not exist. We are all unique. No-one even comes close to the average (cfr “The End of Average” by Todd Rose). That is the reason why standardised aircraft cockpits caused a lot of accidents in the late 40s. That is why a best, standardised diet does not exist.
The solution is to select an approach that works for the unique situation. Although difficult at first, that is the way to drive sustainable results.
Next time a coach offers you a diet, ask why that specific diet seems to be best for you. Next time you consult with an expert, ensure whether that person is passionate about a specific expertise or passionate about truly helping you move forward, potentially by referring you to a better placed person.
That does not yet solve my initial problem: how can I find the teams and organisations that I could help with my expertise & passion, if there is no clear & universal language? I would love to hear your thoughts / advice.
And let us not forget the common wisdom:
- It is easy to explain successes in retrospect.
- The best solutions are the ones that look ridiculously simple.
